UNEP 'Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign'
This global campaign by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) aims to beat climate change by planting 7 billion trees by the end of 2009. Over 4 billion people have already registered their planted trees, and around 6 billion have pledged to plant. The campaign strongly encourages the planting of indigenous trees and trees that are appropriate to the local environment.
This is a major worldwide tree planting campaign, under which people, communities, business and industry, civil society organizations and governments are encouraged to enter tree-planting pledges online. Each pledge can be anything from a single tree to several million trees. The responsibility will lie with the person/ organization making the pledge via the campaign website to arrange for the tree planting.
- An effective campaign website that complements the campaign by keeping track of news and progress made, sharing photos, videos and stories, and providing information and publicity material - all at one place.
- An impressive supporter of the campaign in Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 2004 and founder of Kenya's Green Belt Movement.
