National Paper Bag Making Campaign
As a build-up to Earth Day, a nation wide paper bag making campaign was organized by the Environment Education and Awareness department of TERI on 21 April 2009. A number of schools, colleges, institutes, and individuals from all over the country which included Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Chandigarh, Chattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, UttarPradesh, Uttarakhand, Pondicherry, and Punjab participated whole-heartedly in the campaign.
The objective of this nationwide campaign was to popularize paper bags and encourage the youth to make their own bags with used paper. It also attained an international flavour with the participation of schools from Singapore, Oman, and Qatar. The campaign crossed its target of making one lakh paper bags and at the end stood at a staggering number of 1.3 lakh paper bags.
- The participants moulded old newspapers, scraps, magazine pages, etc. into attractive bags of all shapes and sizes
- The theme was ‘Be Natural’, so, the emphasis was on using only the natural adhesives like mashed rice and wet flour, natural strings made out of jute and coir and natural objects for decoration such as dry leaves and flowers
