Tools and Methods for Integration

Integration of adaptation into policy processes requires a range of tools, methods and technologies at each step of the process.

Integration of adaptation into policy processes mainly involves the following steps.

  • Identification of current risks and coping strategies
  • Estimation of future climatic risks and impacts
  • Using this estimation to review policies, programmes and projects to determine how they might be affected by climate change, how they will contribute to adaptive capacity, and whether modifications are desired
  • Identification of reform measures
  • Implementation
  • Monitoring and evaluation

The tools used at each step of the integration process will vary depending on the scale, the sector, and the user.

A good example of integrating climate change vulnerability and adaptation into sustainable development policy planning and implementation is set in Eastern and Southern Africa.

With this, we have covered the concept of adaptation. Now, let us proceed to discuss the important concept of mitigation.
